"A Geopolitical Awakening": The European Union and Space

In recent years, several countries in Europe have experienced a “geopolitical awakening,” prompting the European Union (EU) to review and redefine its security and defense policies. As a result, the organization’s budget proposal prioritizes space by doubling and tripling overall funding for the EU Space Programme and shifting its focus to security and defense priorities. 

This paper describes European space governance, resources for funding and policies, and key implications for collaboration with the United States, emphasizing the importance of understanding space activities in Europe holistically to illustrate how the EU’s space ambitions are taking shape.
